History of Silveria Mission Hospital
Silveira Mission is in Masvingo Province, situated about 350km south of the capital Harare 110km from Masvingo town, the capital of Masvingo province and 11km from Masvingo-Mutare Highway road. It is a designed district hospital of Bikita and it was opened in 1940 by the Jesuits Fathers and one of the founders was Gonzalo Da Silveira.
The hospital has a capacity of 200 beds and currently its catchment population is 12864. Silveira Hospital is under ward 15 in Bikita East near the boarders of Zaka, Gutu and Manicaland therefore many people flock to the hospital making it so busy. In addition it serves as a referral center for 24 rural health centres.
In 2011 Bishop M.D Bhasera officially opened the Infarmary Private Ward of priests and religious of the Diocese. Since its beginning, Silveira mission hospital has worked with 36 Doctors, and currently it has 3 Doctors namely Dr Kabaya, Dr Dhlandlara and Dr Gonera.
SCHOOL OF NURSING
Silveira Mission Hospital also runs a nurse training school (NTS), which started operations in 1950; it is one of the first Training Schools in the country and nursing training and maternity assistants and it is registered training institute in Zimbabwe.
Tutors who managed School of nursing were OP Sisters up to Sr Theresa Mayor from 1950 – 1989, followed by Sr Mufunda, then Sr Chadenga. Mrs Muhamba is now the current tutor in charge.
