Caritas Masvingo

Caritas Masvingo is one of the Diocesan Caritas located in Zimbabwe in Masvingo province. Caritas Masvingo is the relief and development arm of the Catholic Church implementing various programs and projects in the Diocese of Masvingo. The work of Caritas Masvingo clearly shows the Catholic Social Teachings of the Church.

Masvingo Diocese is located in the southern part Zimbabwe and comprises the whole of Masvingo Province and Beitbridge which is in Matabeleland South. The Diocese has an area of approximately 70 000 square kilometres. The Catholic Diocese covers the seven districts that make up Masvingo Province. Also added to the Diocese is Beitbridge district which in political terms is part of Matebeleland South Province. A few areas of the Diocese lie in Agro-ecological Region 111 while the rest are either in Agro-ecological Region IV and are prone to mid-season dry spells or Region V which receives less than 450mm of rainfall annually, and is the driest part of the country.

The organization also enjoys excellent networking with other sector agencies involved in rural development.

Strategies

  1. All Caritas interventions will be preceded by participatory needs assessment that involves the community through caritas committees.
  2. Capacity building will be core to the operations of caritas through identification and utilisation of training opportunities for Caritas board, Caritas staff and target groups.
  3. Mobilisation of required resources both locally and externally will be key.
  4. Development of strategic plans will precede all caritas activities.
  5. Regular monitoring and evaluation tools and system that is reviewed from time to time.
  6. Fostering networking.
  7. Integrating of programmes.

Projects Carried out by Caritas Masvingo

  1. Sustainable Agriculture, Water and Sanitation programme in three wards of Zaka district (August 2021 to July 2024) both funded by Misereor
  2. Gender and Climate Change Mitigation programme in 5 wards of Bikita and 5 wards of Gutu districts(2023 to 2027) funded by Trocaire
  3. Restoration of Ecosystems and Livelihoods (REAL) project in 10 wards of Beitbridge (October 2022 to September 2023) funded by Catholic Relief Services (CRS)
  4. Beitbridge Rangeland Improvement Project (BRIP) in 5 wards of Beitbridge (October 2022 to September 2023) funded by Catholic Relief Services (CRS).
  5. United Kingdom Aid Match (UKAM) in 10 wards of Zaka district (April 2023 to March 2025) funded by Trocaire UKAM
