According to oral tradition, Mutero Mission Hospital was established in 1956 by the Missionaries. Initially, it was a block next to the father's house with only two rooms which was being used as a dispensary catering for the children who were at the Mission Primary boarding school. In 1959, after the construction of a much bigger father's house, the fathers relocated to that house and their old house became the new dispensary. It is said in 1962, a doctor from Driefontein usually came monthly to attend the patients and sometimes would ferry them to Driefontein for further management.

In 1974, Father J. Hug was the priest in charge, he noticed an increase in the number of patients as well as for the development of the Mission, he decided to build another block across the old one. Brother John and brother Rudrof contributed a lot on the construction of this block. In 1993, with father Shuler being the priest in charge, a nurses house was constructed .

During the time of Father A-way, around 1995, there was a huge tree at the now new labour ward, it is said that people would come and wait for treatment and immunization under that tree. Due to the increase in attendances, the wards were overcrowded and some patients got treatment on floor beds. Facility establishment was two nurses and two nurse aids with Sister X Mavedzenge being the sister in charge. Later, Vice President Muzenda came and saw the large numbers of patients and the issue of floor beds and he decided to extent the facility into a much bigger hospital. Besides, the extension of the hospital, a mortuary and more nurses houses were built. He also had a vision of the construction of a theatre and an x-ray department which is not yet fulfilled. It is said that, Fathers worked hand in glove with the community to achieve the extension of the hospital.

In 1999, Father Zanet was the priest in charge and the hospital was officially opened by the late His Excellency Cde Robert Gabriel Mugabe. Mutero Mission is now an eighty-nine bedded hospital that includes maternity wards, female wards, male wards and Pediatric wards. It also comprises of out-patient department, OI clinic, Antenatal care, postnatal care and family and child health. A total population of 8123 is being served by Mutero Mission Hospital. Under construction, there is pharmacy and a waiting mother's home.
